Here is My Movie Review of Outside The Wire
Now when it comes to this movie I didn't see any trailers but I did hear a lot of people say this movie wasn't really good and people say it was a really bad Netflix film so I was like is it really that bad. So I watched the film and i definitely agree of what they are saying because this film is a mess and the most frustrating thing about it that it does have good actors in it but it is just a really messy and quite possibly one the most disappointing films of 2021 and what the most disappointing Netflix Films because it had potential but the problem is the characters are not that interesting which i'll talk about later in the review.
To be honest I think the story could have been good because in concept the story is really interesting because takes place in 2036 during the Civil War against The US and Russia led by Captain Leo and his helper Thomas Harper To take down these robots made by Russia and and the Civil War and that's basically what the story is for this film. Now that sounds really cool right, you know Civil War in 20036 against Russia the problem is it completely fumbled and missed the mark in execution because well the storyline is interesting. It just suffers from a writing standpoint because the screenplay is a mess which I'll talk about later.
The performances are good. The biggest problem is honestly the characters that they play because the actors are clearly doing their best but it also suffers from a riding point of view because again the screenplay and the directing is which I will get to a lot later.
However the absolute big standout of the entire film is Anthony Mackie as Captain Leo and look even parts where this film is not working and his character is not really good Mackie still does a terrific job Playing the character the best he can even with the really bad script because even in something as mediocre like the Falcon and the Winter Soldier Anthony Mackey was still great as Sam Wilson even though that show was not that interesting he was able to carry the show even with the poor writing. Now the character of Captain Leo is so unlikable because Larry the first thing he does in the opening of this film is kill one of his teammates and then later on it is revealed that he would the main villain working for the Russians which does not make any sense because his villain turn did not have any buildup he just went crazy because well this movie needed a villain and it felt so forced and so weird. Now I will admit that there are great moments with Captain Leo like him fighting the robots or his attempt to save people from being killed by the Russians. Those moments are really fun and really entertaining and for the most part there are moments where the moments do come off really weird especially in the last half of the film. But I think most of Captain Leo's moments are really irritating. The chemistry between him and Damson Idris, Enzo Cilenti, Emily Beecham is terrific.
Someone else who really gave a terrific performance is Damson Idris as Thomas Harper. Now this is an actor I have never seen before because I heard he was great in F1 with Brad Pitt. But after watching him in the film I definitely want to see him and more stuff. Also even parts where this movie is not working he is still able to give a really fun and terrific performance as the character. But much like Anthony Mackey well I like the performance the character of Thomas Harper is unlikable and kind of selfish because he Blindly follows Captain Leo's orders even though he is a horrible person but yet Thomas Harper joins him anyway and the two characters they just argue throughout this whole movie and they have no chemistry as a team you're supposed to buy them and these brave soldiers but they just constantly argue throughout the whole film. Now I will say though I think the themes where Thomas Harper and Captain Leo are battling the robots and trying to survive through the Civil War do lead to some really badass and some really nail buying moments throughout the film I think it works for the most part even when the moments are not fully perfect they are still entertained to watch. The chemistry between him and Anthony Mackey is terrific.
Emily Beecham Is a really interesting actress because I really enjoyed her in films like 28 Weeks Later and Guy Richie's the Covenant and even this film where she plays the character of Sofiya In the film and she does a terrific job as the character because even parts were this movie is not working Emily Beecham. But the character of Sofiya is just really boring. She just gives Exposition and that's all she does. She doesn't go through any character development in this movie so she doesn't really play a big part in the film so she's kind of a really underutilized character. The scene where she first meets Captain Leo is a really good scene but it doesn't really lead to anything important. I mean sure the air racks are entertaining but they don't really do anything as characters. So while that scene is entertaining it doesn't really contribute much to the overall story. The chemistry between her and Anthony Mackey is pretty good.
Now Enzo Cilenti is a perfect actor. I enjoyed him in films like Free Fire, Next, The Martian and The Beekeeper. You know even in this movie I think he does an excellent job as the character Miller even parts where this movie is not working. Enzo Cilenti still gives a really fun performance as the character. But much like I said about the rest of the characters Miller is basically a nothing character, he's just there to give exposition and that's it and he dies in the film so he doesn't really contribute much to the rest of the film other than to give expedition and to die. Now the thing where Millers interacts with captain Leo and Thomas Harper is really interesting and I think for the most part it works but I think he needed a lot more screen time and Enzo Cilenti needed a way better script in order for the character to be further developed. The chemistry between him and Ethiomacky is pretty good. I do think they have a maiden chemistry with one another.
But the biggest problem with this movie is the directing by Mikael Hafstorm. This is the director who directed films like Evil from 2003 1408 from 2007. So you think because he directed those really good films you would think that he would do a traffic job directing the film well unfortunately he does not because he does make this film overly messy Not in terms of story. But in terms of the characters because he tried to make you feel bad for a Captain Leo But then he wanted to feel bad for Thomas Harper and you don't feel bad for either of them because they are just so unlikable because of the poorly done character development that he does for the film just make the film really bland with a really good concept so overall I think he did a really bad job directing this film.
So in conclusion I really wanted to like this movie. I loved the concept of a Civil war in 20036 against the US and Russia with robots and I thought that would work in execution but well I enjoy the storyline from a concept point of view it just fell apart in execution because of the horrible directing in the writing. Also the performances I really enjoyed I really liked Anthony Mackie as captain Leo. I also enjoyed Damson Idris As Thomas Harper and I think he gave the best performance out of all of them because you can tell that he was having a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to watching him and more stuff. But the problem is the characters are just so unlikable because they are just pouring written whether you are talking about Captain Leo's villain turn that twist was completely stupid or you're talking about the parts where Thomas Harper just randomly joins Captain Leo for no reason. Also the other actors while they're good in this movie they just don't do anything. The characters don't go through any character development, so they are just really dull and really uninteresting in this movie despite how much these actors try to give good performances. Also they actually think within the were pretty good they were really fun to watch but then they could have been a lot better if the writing for the entire film was perfect. But in the end I think this is a really disappointing and really underwhelming film of 2021 is up there with black Widow in terms of being one most disappointing films of 2021. No I will say though this movie is not as boring as Silk Road with Jason Clark because stuff actually happens in the film. But It's still not a good movie. So I say skip this movie and go watch Shang Chi with Tony Leung because it has a much better storyline because it is better executed than the storyline in this film and all the characters have stuff to do and it has more memorable moments than anything in this film. This is a really disappointing film that I really wanted to like it. I give this film a 4/10.
