Here is My Movie Review of 28 Years Later
Now when this film was announced I was really excited for it because I really enjoyed the first two movies being 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. I thought the trailer looked really incredible and I really wanted to go see it. I went to see it and this is probably my favorite one out of the three movies. Also this film is probably one of the biggest surprises of the entire year.
So basically what happens is that it takes place 28 years later after the first two films you have this kid name Spike and his family his mother is dealing with some type of illness and father Jamie who wants to train him to be a Survivor against the zombie apocalypse and Spike doesn't think he can do it but then he gains the courage to fight for survival and then he and his mother find this guy named Erica wants to kill all the zombies because he doesn't want to be eaten by them and Spike´s mother Isla Want to try to protect the baby zombie because she is not infected. So they visit Doctor Kelson So he can help them get back home to the island. That's up to Spike To survive against the zombie outbreak and try to cure his mother Isla of her illness and that's basically what the storyline is for this film. I have to say out of the three movies this one has the best storyline out of all of them because you essentially have this kid named Spike And he wants to fight for survival against the zombies and protect his mother and I think it is a really powerful and emotional storyline for this third installment.
But as terrific as the storyline is, the best thing in this movie is the acting because out of the three movies this one has probably the best acting out of all of them now 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks later had tremendous acting but this one had the best one because this one is focus more on the family dynamic.
However the thing that makes this movie tremendous is the masterful and captivating performance from Alfie Williams who gives one of the best child performances of the entire year as Spike because he gives such a beautiful and emotional Performance Throw out this entire film. To be honest he is the big standout of the entire film. Now the character of Spike is probably my favorite character of this entire film because Spike is a kid who's dealing with a lot he has been living on this island and trying to survive against the zombie outbreak because he's essential is going through quarantine and his father Jamie want to Training to be a professional Survivor and fend off the zombies so he doesn't turned into one. Also the character arc that Spike goes through is actually one of the most beautiful character arcs of the entire year because at first he doesn't know how to fight off a zombie but he does start to learn how to be a survivor as the film progresses he starts to understand how to kill a zombie. The themes involve in Spike are tremendous weather is him learning how to shoot a zombie in the neck by his father Jamie or it's him help his mother Take care of the zombie baby all those moments are really fun and Perfect moments in the film because you're watching Spike learning how to be a Powerful and brave zombie fighter. The chemistry between him and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Edvin Ryding, Ralph Fiennes Is terrific.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson Plays Spike´s father Jamie in the film and his performance is actually really tremendous because he gives a lot of really powerful and Incredible performance In this film. Now the character of Jamie is actually really excellent because yes he is a little strict with his son spike but that's because he's been through a lot you know his wife is dying of a mysterious illness he has been quarantined for a very long time because of the zombie outbreak that's been happening so you can understand why he is really hard on his son but he's still really cares about him and he will go so far to protect his son and train him to become a survivor so he doesn't get infected by the zombies. The seasoning Jamie in the film are so incredible and really fun to watch whether it's him training his son's bike to shoot a zombie with a crossbow or even though the more dramatic moments like him slapping Spike across the face because he don't believe that his wife is sick is a really hard seeing to watch but it makes sense because Jamie again has been going through a lot of really disturbing shit in his life So you can understand why he would raise his voice and scolding his son because he doesn't believe that his wife is dying of something and I think all those moments that I just mentioned are really powerful and really entertaining. The chemistry between him and Alfie Williams Is terrific because to be honest I can rewatch this movie again and just watch all of their scenes together. That's how strong their characters and their chemistry were throughout the entire film.
Jody Comer plays Plays Spike's mother Isla In the film and her performance is magnificent because he gives one of the most beautiful and one of the more emotional performances in the entire film because she gives such a raw and captivating performance as this character. Now the character of Isla Is a person that you really feel bad for in this film because she is losing her memories she is suffering through this mysterious illness and she has to protect her son Spike from the zombie outbreak so that is why she wants jamie with her husband to train their son. But then you find out that she's actually dying from cancer and that whole twist revealing that she was dying from cancer is probably one of the most shocking twists of this entire film. The scenes of Isla Are really emotional and really Some of the more heartbreaking moments of this film whether it's her saying her final goodbyes to her son Spike after she tells Doctor Kelson To euthanize her because she is dying or it's her taking care of the zombie baby all of these scenes are really tragic and really beautiful to watch and she probably gives one of the most beautiful performances of the entire film. The chemistry between her and Alfie Williams is spectacular because you actually believe that this is a real mother and son relationship. You kind of believe that this family has been through a zombie apocalypse if this happened in real life. That's how strong and perfect their chemistry was throughout this entire film.
Edvin Ryding Plays Erik Sundqvist In the film and his performance is probably the most entertaining and eccentric performance in the film and you can tell that he is having a ton of fun in the film. Now the character of Erik Sundqvist is spectacular because he is this zombie hunter who has been through the outbreak longer than Spike and tells him he has to learn how to be a true Survivor and take care of his mother and be really independent so he doesn't get eaten by the zombies. The scene where Erik Sundqvist sees Spike and his mother Isla Are helping this pregnant zombie give birth to her baby and his reaction it's so funny like freaking out he says are you guys so sweet taking care of a zombie baby are you guys crazy or something. It is probably the funniest moment of the entire film because this movie does not have many funny jokes but that whole thing on the bus of Eric screaming and freaking out was really funny and really entertaining. The chemistry between him and Alfie Williams Is remarkable. I do think their chemistry was really fun to watch and the bonding between him and Spike was the strongest aspect of the entire film.
Now let's talk about Ralph Fiennes. He is a tremendous actor. He has given some really fun and really entertaining performances whether it is him in The Menu as Chef Slowik. Or him in the film the Prince of Egypt as King Rammeses the II. Among many other films he's been. He always gives it his all and I have to say his performance in this movie is tremendous. He does such a magnificent and fantastic job as the character of Doctor Kelson because so entertaining as the character but he is also really unrecognizable because he is covered in all that makeup in the film. Also if you told me that this was Ralph Fiennes I'll be like no I don't think that the same actor from the menu I think it is a completely different actor. But the fact that it is Ralph Fiennes covered in all that makeup just makes it more surprising because it is the same actor from The Menu. Now the character of Doctor Kelson is an interesting character because you hear about him from the town's people saying that he is evil, he is crazy. But Spike and his mother visit him and it turns out that Dr Kelson is actually a really nice and really intelligent guy in the film and You can see that you really care for Spike and his mother Isla. The scenes involving Dr Kelson are really interesting and really fun to watch whether it's him explaining to Spike Why he had all these dead skulls lying around his place. Or it's him telling Spike that his mother has cancer and all those moments with Dr Kelson did lead to a lot of really powerful and really fun moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Alfie Williams Is astonishing. I do think their chemistry is the strongest in the entire film and you can tell that both actors were having fun in this movie together.
But as tremendous as the acting is, we have to talk about the beautiful and masterful directing by Danny Boyle. Now he directed the first film not being 28 Days Later from 2002 And he did a terrific job directing that first film. But I have to say he actually steps it up in this film. He actually has more to the lore of this universe like for example this movie showed that not all zombies are bad because the baby zombie was not infected so it was the only nice one out of all the zombies in this film. I also like how he develops all on the character especially the character of Spike who is doing with the zombie outbreak he has been quarantined for a long time His mother is dying of some random illness that he finds out that it is cancer and the father named Jamie who was very strict Towards him tell him that he has to learn how to survive and be independent. You also have dr Kelson who is this genius scientist that people say was evil they thought he was crazy the townspeople essentially treat him like He was a person that was not trusted but when Spike and mother visit him he that way really nice to them he Help them Raise the baby zombie and Telling SpikeThat he have still let go of his mother because she is slowly dying so he is willing to dart her multiple timesTo essentially euthanize her. So I thought he did a terrific job developing all the characters In the film. I also like how he made this movie More scary than the first film because the first film was really scary and I had tension but this one is even more horrifying because There will be a really quiet and emotional moment with Spike and his family but then you would eventually get a scene where a zombie crashed through the window or charges at Spike trying to kill him. Or you'll have a scene of a zombie viciously biting someone's head off and eating them. So I think he did a magnificent job directing this film. I am so excited to see how he's going to direct 28 Years Later The Bone Temple.
So in conclusion I was really surprised by this film because the storyline was really terrific having Spike survive the zombie outbreak with his mother and father and trying to become a Zombie Hunter essentially was really fantastic and out of the three movies this one evenly has the best storyline of the entire film. This is probably my favorite storyline in a 2025 filmBecause it is up there with the Thunderbolts as one of the best storylines of the entire year. But the performances are the best thing in this entire movie because there are so many standout performances like Alfie Williams As Spike or Ralph Fiennes as Dr Kelson. Those two performances were really fun to watch in the film. Both Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes Had so much excellent chemistry throughout this entire film. Although the action sequences are really tremendous and really scary because every time you see a zombie you are on the edge of your seat just rooting for the main characters that are Spike and his family not being eaten or killed by the zombies especially that Final chase scene where Spike is running away from the zombie hoard. It is probably one of the best action sequences of the entire year is right up there with the climax and Thunderbolts* as what the best climaxes of 2025. Also the relationship between Spike and his mother is actually one of the best things of the entire film because they are the emotional core throughout the entire film. I am so excited to see what they are going to do next in 28 Years Later The Bone Temple. I can't wait to see how that film goes. This is probably one of the best films I have seen of the entire year. This is probably my favorite film of the entire year. Also this film is probably up there with Love Hurts with Ke Huy Quan as one of the best films of the 2020s. I highly recommend you watch this film especially if you like 28 Days Later which stars Cillian Murphy. You'll really like the film and I highly recommend you go see this movie theater. You will not be disappointed. I give this movie a 10/10.
