Here is My Movie Review of The Card Counter
So basically what happened is that you have this guy named William Tell who is an ex military interrogation turned gambler and he is getting haunted by stuff from his past. So she decides to go to multiple casinos to try to get away from his tortured past and he meets this woman named La Linda and they start a relationship and Then he made this guy named Cirk and William Tell teach them how to gamble and they start to bond and it's up to William Tell to get over his PTSD and start a normal life and that is basically what the stories for this movie.
The acting in this movie is fantastic. I think everyone does a great job as their characters. I also think I can tell that they are having fun in the film.
However the absolute big standout of the entire film is Oscar Isaac as William Tell. What makes William Tell such a tragic character is that you can see the horrendous things he has gone through being tortured by his Military boss Major John Gordo. The best moment with William Tell is when he falls asleep and he starts having visions in dreams of his past in jail and not only is it really emotional but it makes sense because he has suffered so much PTSD so he uses gambling to try to escape it. It is probably the darkest moment in the entire film. The chemistry between him and Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, and Willem Dafoe. Is still terrific.
Tiffany Haddish plays La Linda In the film. I have to say she does an excellent job as the character. What makes La Linda Such a awesome character is that you can tell that she really wants to help William Tell escape his PTSD. Probably the best moment with La Linda is when She and William Tell are in a bar talking about how they like each other. Not only was it really compelling but it makes sense because she started to develop feelings for him. It is probably the most emotional scene in the entire film. The chemistry between her and Oscar Isaac is outstanding.
Tye Sheridan plays Cirk In the film. I have to say he does an amazing job as this character. What makes Cirk sech is an incredible character that you can see that he really cares for. William Tell wants to learn how to gamble like him. Probably the best moment with Cirk is when he first meets William Tell and he tells them that he can come along with him to the casino to learn how to gamble and not only was it a really lighthearted scene but it sets up the bond between two characters really well. And then probably the most powerful moment in the entire film. The chemistry between him and Oscar Isaac is astounding.
Willem Dafoe Plays Major John Gordo In the film and I have to say even though he is not in the film a whole lot he does a remarkable job as the character. What makes Major John Gordo Such a awesome end powerful character that he has downright terrifying because in the flashbacks here they military leader and he raises his voice telling his soldiers what to do and probably the darkest moment is where he has one of his soldiers to penn William Teller to the wall So he can visually beat him in the shape and not only was it really dark but it makes sense because in real life if you're in the military you have to do whatever the commander tells you to do In order to survive. The chemistry between him and Oscar Isaac is marvelous.
The directing by Paul Schrader Is really interesting because why I like about his directing is that he does a flawless job of tackling the subject of PTSD and how hard it can scar people and some people have it so bad that they need a way to escape it And I like how he takes the subject matter really seriously because PTSD is not a laughing matter It is really dark and really depressing. I'm thinking this really tremendous of how he did that.
So in conclusion I really enjoyed this movie. I like how the film discusses PTSD in a very mature and serious manner. I think this is up there with Spider-Man across the spider verse as one of Oscar's best performances and one of his best films ever made. I still think this is up there with the Guilty with Jake Gyllenhaal and one of the most underrated films of 2021. I think more people should watch this film especially if you like Molly's Game with Idris Elba. I give this movie a 10/10.
