Here is my movie review of Mute
Now when it comes to this movie a lot of people really hated it if that they do say that this is the worst Netflix film now as for me I never really hate it in fact I always enjoyed because of the fact that takes place in the future and one of my favorite actors that being Paul Rudd was in this movie. Now I'll talk about his performance later but something I really enjoyed about him is that he's not funny on the contract he is downright scary because there will be moments where Paul Rudd's character is very calm but then there will be moments where he would raise his voice and try to kill someone who gets his way and I still think that was really fun it's really fun to seeing your favorite actor go from really nice to downright scary in fact the only other comedic actor I could think of that has given a dark and creepy performance is Awkwafina was she played the character of Mina and breaking news in Yuba County which was it dark comedy but Awkwafina was pray unstable and you can tell that she had a lot of fun in that movie.
Now a lot of people say that this movie has really subpar acting and I never really understood that because when you look at other movies like Chaos Walking and The Snowman those movies had way worst acting Because those movies Had great actors but they were completely bland. Well this film utilized its actors way better and you could tell that all these actors are having a lot of fun.
Now Alexander Skarsgard Is a great actor in fact he is giving some really amazing performances like Randall Flag in The Stand and Amleth In The Northman and both of those performances were really awesome. But this film he is really terrific because he is able to emote without saying any lines of dialogue until the end of the film. In fact I think this is one of my favorite performances from him because again he's able to give a really fun and have to vein performance without saying much dialogue. Now the character of Leo It's incredible because you really feel bad for him because he's unable to talk his girlfriend's disappeared and he want to find her on top of dealing with the two US Army surgeons Cactus Bill and Duck Teddington and he wants to be able to talk. The scenes with Leo are really fun to watch whether it's him trying to find his girlfriend or him Meeting Cactus Bill for the first time it doesn't lead to some really heart pounding and some really disturbing moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Justin Theroux and to Paul Rudd is terrific.
Now Justin Theroux Is a terrific actor in fact he's giving some really awesome and interesting performances like in the show Maniac, Lady and The Tramp 2019. Now he did a tremendous job in both of those projects because you can tell He is having a lot of fun. But in this movie he was really Excellent in this film as the character as Duck Teddington and you can tell he is having a lot of fun in the film. now the character of Duck Teddington It's really creepy because he really cares about his friend Cactus bill But there are some moments way outright crossing the line with their friendship But the one scene in particular where their friendship almost fall apart and I'm the scene where duck decides to put cactus bills daughter on a treadmill a sorts having weird feelings towards her and Cactus Bill outright snaps and tries to kill him and that scene was really disturbing because Duck was kind of being a creep towards the little girl and Cactus Bill was very protective of his daughter It's probably one of the most disturbing moments in the film and also the scene where he looked that cactus build dead body and he doesn't care He's like completely fine that his friend is dead And it didn't lead to some really creepy and some really disturbing moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Alexander Skarsgard is tremendous.
Now let's talk about Paul Rudd who is my favorite actor of all time and now I always like him as an actor because he is very versatile he could be really funny he could be really dramatic and he has given some really Captivating and some really fun performances throughout his career like in the MCU as Ant-Man, Death Of A Unicorn. Even in the Cider House Rules He gave a really fun and really dramatic performance in that film. Now you noticed all the films I mentioned Paul Rudd plays the nice character. By this film that's not the case because he is really scary as Cactus Bill because there will be moments where Paul Rudd´s character is very calm in the film but then there will be other moments where he outright raises his voice and threatens to kill anyone who gets his way and this is the only movie Paul Rudd´s character is a full-on misogynistic and he did a terrific job of balancing both sides of this character and you can tell that Paul Rudd is having a lot of fun as this character. So Paul Rudd did a fantastic job in this film. Also hit the interesting thing is that you could say that Paul Rudd is playing really accurate interpretation of Professor Pyg because in the film he is a psychopath and he wear the bloody apron and he is the right age and much like what I said about Mads Mikkelsen Playing a perfect doctor Doom in Mufasa The Lion King the same thing can be applied here Paul Rudd actually played a really accurate interpretation of Professor Pyg. What is also really funny is that when you watch Paul Rudd in Ant-Man The Wasp and then you watch him in this you can tell that both of these characters are different because Scott Lang is really down to earth and really funny well Cactus Bill is downright scary and outright insane. Now the character Cactus Bill is really interesting because he's the US Army surgeon but he is downright psychotic because there will be moments where he calm but then there will be moments where he would lose it and threaten anyone who gets his way. Now the most interesting thing is that all the people in the city are downright disgusting because all the violence in this movie is not caused by Paul Rudd but it is caused by all stupid people who get really drunk. How? Well earlier on the film where bar fight that happens and Paul Rudd is not in the scene but you can tell that a lot of people got really mad and they started beating the crap out of each other and try to kill one another and that scene was really dark. The scenes with Cactus Bill are really scary especially where he finds out that Duck was being sexually attracted to his daughter and he pull his knife out and slams his hand onto the counter and threatens to kill him because Duck was trying to get with Cactus Bill's kid and that scene was really dark and really scary and then another scene where Cactus Bill is at shopping mall and he talks trash to this woman and tell her to get out and shove something up her ass and that scene was also really dark because he was treating a girl like garbage. Now what's interesting is that Paul Rudd played Scott Lang in the MCU Who is a really great dad because he really cares about his daughter Cassie. But in this movie Cactus Bill does not have the best judgment What do I mean by that? Well later on in the movie there is a scene where he needs someone to babysit his little daughter but rather hiring a real babysitter he decided to do it in a weird way hires a the stripper to look after her and It's just how crazy Cactus Bill is. Now Paul Rudd´s character does go over the top in this film because there's a scene in the shopping mall where Cactus Bill steals food from a store and a security guard tries to stop him and Cactus Bill brutally shoves him into the wall and pules his knife out and threatens to slit the guard's throat and nobody tried to stop him they all just watch of this man gets tortured and it is where the scariest moments in the film. Now this movie clearly shows that Paul Rudd is the villain and he is. But I would say that even the people in the city are just as cruel and evil as he is. The chemistry between him and Alexander Skarsgard Is incredible.
Now the best thing about this movie is The directing by Duncan Jones because this is the same guy who directed Moon and he did a Stellar job directing that film I would say that he directed death film just as well as he did with that film because why I love about his directly and this is that he actually gives all these characters personalities especially Leo he make this character who doesn't really talk throughout the whole movie and to a very tragic and very sympathetic character because when he was younger he would trying to get voice back but unfortunately the doctor was going to do anything about it so he couldn't talk and i did all older he really was really lonely in depressed and then He fell in love with a girl. But then she went missing and he really wanted to find her and You can see how determined he was so that was really interesting How he was able to make a mute character like Leo Be actually very interesting. I also like how he developed the character of Cactus Bill because This is a character that is not afraid to go off the deep end because they'll be moments where he calm but then the very next scene he'll go crazy and and even though he really cared about his daughter Josie he doesn't make the best choices because he doesn't hire a babysitter to look after he hired a stripper and Even though it's poor judgment you can someone understand why Cactus bill is so protective over the starring he is not afraid To threaten anyone especially Doc that whole scene where he threatens to cut his arm off and kill him for having sexual entrance in his little girl That scene was really dark. I think he did a terrific job of developing Cactus bill at the character Because even though he's crazy he does care about his daughter but again he doesn't make the best judgment. I think I can connect this movie to Moon how it takes place in the same universe Even though has a completely Different story I thought that was really interesting so overall I think he did a Stellar job directing this film.
So in conclusion i still really enjoyed this film in fact this is probably one of the most underrated movies of 2018 because I don't think it's nearly as bad a lot of people say is because I actually did enjoy the story focusing around Leo trying to find out what happened to his girlfriend will get him wrapped up with the two US Army surgeons Cactus Bill and Duck was it really interesting concept in the film executes it perfectly. Also there are far worse movies than this film like Death Note 2017 or Suicide Squad 2016. those films are a lot more unwatchable than this film. But something else I really liked about the movie are the performers in particular guard at Leo can you give such a beautiful and really emotional Captivating performance even though his character doesn't talk he still did a Stellar job in this movie. But the big stand out to me is Paul Rudd he gave the scariest and one of the best performances in the film and it's really funny when you watch him in Ant-Man and The Wasp he's completely happy and he cracks jokes he's very down to earth but then you watch him in this and he is downright psychotic and downright horrifying to watch because there will be moments where Paul Rudd's character is very calm but then there will be moment where he raises his voice and threats to kill anyone and you can tell that Paul Rudd is having a lot of fun in this film. In fact all the scenes with Cactus Bill are my favorite moments in the film especially that mall scene that scene alone is really scary because what Cactus Bill does is downright horrifying because he's threatens to slit a cop's throat and nobody stops him and it kind of remind me the scene in the movie Unhinged where Russell Crow's character cracks a guy´s head open in a diner and nobody stops him in that movie and and the same thing happened in this film as well. I also enjoyed the cinematography. How it's all neon colors because it takes place in the future and remind me of Blade Runner 2029 that's how amazing the cinematography is in this film. This is easily in my 10 favorite films of 2018. I highly recommend you watch this film especially if you like really dark sci-fi films like Nope and Prey. Then I'm sure you're going to like this one as well. I give this film a 10/10.
I agree with you Lou that Mute is a really awesome sci-fi film. I still think it is a really underrated Netflix original movie. Also Paul Rudd gives a Really great villain performance as Cactus Bell. I still think it is a really great villain performance. I'll say this it is probably the most underrated movie villain performance I have ever seen.
