Here is My Movie Review of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.
Now when it comes to this movie I always enjoy it because it was something new that the MCU did and that was making a martial arts superhero film and out of all the films in phase 4 This one was always my favorite I always enjoyed The characters in the action sequences. Also this film I think is better than Black Widow because i Always found that movie really forgettable. Well this one's a lot more memorable in terms of story and characters and action sequences. Not to mention it did give us one of the most sympathetic villains in the MCU.
Now the storyline is really incredible because it focuses on Shang Chi Who was raised by his father Xu Wenwu in the leader of the 10 Rings and He and his best friend Katie are spending time together and everything starts to go well until Shang Chi's dad wants him to come home and he tell them that they can be a family again by going to Ta Lo because because he said that his wife yin-Li is calling to them so they go to Ta Lo and unfortunately Xu Wenwu Releases the dweller in darkness so it's up to shang Chi to take down his father and kill the dweller and darkness and put his past behind him and that's basically what the story is for this film and out of all the faith 4 movies in the MCU this one easily has the best storyline out of all of them because really engaging and there's a lot of emotional weight to the story
Now out of all the phase 4 movies in the MCU that's one probably has the best acting out of all of them because you can tell that Everyone is having a lot of fun and I feel like the acting in this film is better than the acting in the eternals because in that film the acting with really great but there were some performance that were either really boring in the case of Bill Skargaard as Kro or just flat out forgettable like Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman but in this film I think all the acting is perfect.
Now for this being Simu Liu ´ s Very first movie he has ever done. He still gives a really fun and really emotional performance at the character and out of all the new actors who have joined the MCU he is probably my favorite out of all of them because you can tell he is having a lot of fun as this character. Now Shang Chi as the character was terrific because out of all the new MCU characters he is probably my favorite because he go through a really powerful and emotional character arc because he had a really tragic past because he had to watch his mother be killed by the Iron Gang and his father when will train them to be a killer and won him to be like him. Also he is similar to Short Round from Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom because both of them have tragic origins and they both know martial arts the difference being is that Short Round is a lot more happier and cracks jokes well Shang Chi is more tragic and serious. Now unlike Thor from Thor Love and Thunder Shang Chi only cracks jokes when the movie wants him to crack a joke but it's most deadpan like the way he says the lines that makes it funny so he's not overly silly like what they like Hulk and She-Hulk. Now the scene Shang Chi are probably some of my favorite moments in the film whether It is him fighting on the bus against the members of the 10 Rings. or him freaking out that his friend Katy is driving really fast. It does lead to Some really intense and funny moments in the film. The chemistry between him and Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Ben Kingsley, Meng’er Zhang, and Florian Munteanu Is still terrific. Fun fact actors like Liviu Covalshi, Edward Zo, Karl Ting, Lewis Tan, Steven Yeun, Mike Moh, Alex Landi, Ross Butler, and Ludi Lin were all considered to play Shang-Chi.
Now let's talk about the controversial performance in this film and is Awkwafina as Katy because a lot of people really hate this performance they say she's very annoying they say she completely ruins the film. But to be completely honest I never really hated Awkwafina as this character. I always found her really funny and really entertaining to watch. Now the character of Katy Is really interesting because she does care for her friend Shang Chi and wants to help him prevent the Dweller in darkness from emerging from the gate as well as stopping his father Xu Wenwu from destroying Ta Lo. But she is also really funny or whatever something intense happens she freaks out like she almost is going to die or doesn't want to do anything messed up. The scenes with Katy are really funny whether it's her reacting to Shang Chi fighting on the bus. Or one of my favorite moments is when she and Shang Chi are on top of this building that's about two fall over and she looks down and she says oh hell no screw you I'm not doing this and that is what makes it funny is because she refuses to jump out the window because she thinks it's a really bad idea. It does lead to some really funny and some really fun moments in the film. The chemistry between her and Simu Liu Is still amazing.
Florian Munteanu plays Wenwu´s henchmen Razor Fist In the film. Now he doesn't play a big role in the film but for what he has his performance is still fun and really entertaining you can tell that he was having a lot of fun as this character. Now the character of Razor Fist Is it really interesting because he is essentially the Mandarin's bodyguard Who wants to help him bring his mother back from the dead so they could be a family again. Now he does have some interesting moments like the bus fight or him fighting all the Soul Eaters it does lead to some really fun and entertainment moments in the film. He also reminds me of Wolverine if Wolverine had a machete for an arm instead of claws. I think he's up there with Klaw from Black Panther as one of the most entertaining villains in the MCU.
Now Ben Kingsley comes back as Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3 and he still gives a terrific performance. You can tell that he is having a lot of fun in the film. Now the character of Trevor Slattery is actually really interesting because in Iron Man 3 he was posing as the Mandarin as a villain and Xu Wenwu found out and threatened to kill him but instead he locked him in the dungeon and made him his entertainer. The scenes with Trevor Slattery are really funny especially we said that the way he wanted to become an actor is when he was watching the original planet of the Apes films he thought the Apes were actual actors so that's why he became an actor and that is still one of the funniest moments in the film Also the scene where he Introduces Shang Chi and Katy to his little friend Morris and it does lead to some really funny and does lead to some really fun moments throughout the film. Fun fact actors like Gary Oldman, John Malkovich, Mads Mikkelsen, Clive Owen Javier Bardem, Dustin Hoffman were all considered to play Trevor Slattery. The chemistry between him and Simu Liu Is still fantastic.
Meng’er Zhang plays Shang Chi´s sister Xu Xialing In the film And she still gives a terrific and entertaining performance because you can tell that she is having a lot of fun as this character. Now the character of Xu Xialing It's really incredible because much like her brother she wants to protect Ta Lo and stop the dweller and darkness from destroying everything As well as protecting her family. The scenes with Xu Xialing are probably some of the best moments in Phase 4 whether it's her fighting her brother in the cage or her Saving Katie from falling off the building it does lead to some really heart pounding and really fun moments in the film. The chemistry between her and Simu Liu Is still astonishing.
However the absolute big standout of this entire film is Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu because he probably gives one of my favorite MCU villains performances in Phase 4 because I like Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man No Way Home. I enjoy Richard Madden as Ikaris from Eternals and Christian Bale as Gorr the God butcher in Thor Love and Thunder. But this one was always my favorite MCU villain performance in phase 4 because he gave one the most powerful MCU villain performances. Now Xu Wenwu has always been one of my favorite MCU phase 4 villains because of the tragedy of this character because Xu Wenwu who was this Fierce Warrior who has battled and countless Wars killing people and he settled down with it his wife Yin Ling and Hannah family until she was taken from him by the Iron Gang and now he wants his son to help him go to town now so he can bring his wife back because he keeps he hearing her voice calling to him and to bring her home and his motivations are actually really interesting because again he want to bring his wife back and he has good intentions but the way he goes about it in messed up way because he's putting a lot of people in danger. Also I feel like Xu Wenwu is sort of the Dreyfus of MCU because both him and Dreyfus from Dawn of The Plant of the Apes are very much one in the same in turns of being shattered and depressed characters because Dreyfus lost his whole family during the virus well Xu Wenwu lost his wife when the Iron Gang killed her and both of these villains are very sympathetic and both of them have good ideas of how they can solve their problems like Dreyfus he wants to kill all the Apes so the humans can be the dominant species and Xu Wenwu wants to bring his wife back from the dead so him and his two kids and her could be a family but both of these villains go about it in a horrendous way. The scenes with Wenwu are probably some of my MCU phase 4 villain moments whether it is him fighting Shanghai for the first time and he says you were there when they came for her and you did nothing you stood at the window and watched her die and it does make sense because he blames his own son for not rescuing his mother even though Shang-chi was just a kid at the time or the scene where he Tells Shanghai that his wife is leaving them clues to find her so they can be a family again it doesn't lead to some really awesome and some really emotional moments throughout the film and out of all the MCU phase 4 villains I think Xu Wenwu has some of the best moments in phase 4. I think Xu Wenwu is up there with Cassandra Nova from Deadpool and Wolverine as one of my favorite villains in the MCU. chemistry between him and Simu Liu Is marvelous. Fun fact actors Donnie Yen and Ken Watanabe were both considered to play Xu Wenwu/The Mandarin.
However the best thing about this movie is The directing by Destin Daniel Cretton because why I love about his directing is that he doesn't think Glorious job of developing all these characters especially Shang Chi by giving him this really tragic origin with his dad how he lost his mother because the Iron Gang and his father when will wanted him to be like him just go around and kill him innocent people. But Shang-Chi didn't want to be like his dad he wanted to protect people and be the hero. I also like how he really develops the character of Xu Wenwu because he gives them this really tragic and beautiful origin of him losing the love of his wife Yin-Li and want to bring her back so he and his son and daughter can be a family again and he had good intentions but he goes about doing it the wrong way and I also like how he doesn't have any dumb jokes the character is taking seriously. i also like how the way he starts off the film starts off of showing Xu Wenwu ´ s early years of being the very dangerous and Fierce Warrior and then it shows him with a family. So overall I think he did a terrific job of directing the film.
So in conclusion this is still one of my favorite MCU phase 4 movies because it has one of the best story lines of Phase 4 that being Shang Chi trying to suppress his dark past with his father and and not go down this dark path as well as preventing his Xu Wenwu from releasing the dweller in darkness and protect the people that he cared about and become a hero. Also I think this story is a lot more compelling than the storyline Black Widow because I think that film that's how they really dull and it really bland storyline to deploy that it's probably one of the most boring storylines in the MCU phase 4. Also the performances are really incredible whether it is Simu Liu as Shang Chi. Or Awkwafina as Katy because both actors do a stellar job as their character they are both really fun and really entertaining. But the actor that steals the entire show is Tony Leung who gives one of the best one of my favorite MCU phase 4 villain performances as Xu Wenwu because you can tell that he is having a lot of fun at this character. Also Xu Wenwu as villain I still really enjoy his tragic backstory as well as his incredible and unique motivation of him trying to get his wife back so he brings his family back. But he goes about doing it in the wrong way by almost killing everyone in Ta Lo. I still think Xu Wenwu is up there with Magneto from the first X-Men film as one of my favorite villains of all time. I also think he's up there with Killmonger from Black Panther as one of my favorite MCU villains. I also still think Katy is up there with Louis from the Ant-Man films as one of the funniest side characters in the MCU. I highly recommend you watch this film especially if you enjoy Iron Man with Robert Day Jr then I'm sure you're going to like this one as well. I give this movie a 10/10.
