Here is My Movie Review of The Boogeyman 2023
Now something interesting about this film The original cut of this film with actually going to be a lot more scarier than the one we got because the one that was test screened was so scary that people ran out of the theater horrified so they had to go back and re-edit the film and tone it down. Which that is very interesting and something that's very interesting about this film is that a lot of people say that this is the most scariest Stephen King movie ever made and I don't really agree with that because yes the film is really scary. But I think The Shining in the was more scarier than this because in that film you have Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance going crazy trying to kill his whole family And then a lot more creepier moments in that film like the head may seen the iconic here's Johnny seen where Jack Torrance ax the door open trying to kill his wife. But with this film I still enjoy it In fact it's probably one of my favorite films of 2023.
Now the storyline in this movie is really incredible because it is accurate to the original story because it revolves around this guy named Will Harper who is coping with the Lost of his wife and he has to take care of this two daughters and one day he hears a mysterious noise and he figured out it's the boogeyman who are the manifestation of loneliness and depression and he has to do whatever it takes to protect his two kids and fight off the Boogeyman before I can consume anyone else in his family. That is basically what the story is for this film. I have to say I really enjoy the storyline how tackle the subject of loneliness and depression but I will say though I think the storyline in The Shining is a lot more memorable because we focus on a guy that being Jack Torrance Going more Crazy at the film Progressive and he eventually snaps and tries to kill his whole family I think that is a lot more Iconic then the storyline in this film. I will say though that the storyline this is actually up there with the storyline in Evil Dead Rise as one of the best storylines of 2023.
Now The performances in this movie are Incredible in fact this is probably one of the best acted Stephen King films because all the actors are tremendous as the characters now i will say I think the shining had way better acting because you have Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance.
Chris Messina plays Will Harper in the film. I have to say he still does a spectacular job as the character. Now Will Harper as a character is perfect because he is exactly how he is in the short story. He is still coping with the loss of his wife, he has to take care of his two kids and he has to overcome his grave by battling The Boogeyman to protect his family. The scenes Will Harper I'll probably some of the most creepiest but really incredible moments in the film whether it's him talking to his therapist about his dead wife or the scene of him can grabbed by the boogeyman does led to some really creepy and some really scary moments because that scene alone of him getting attacked by the boogeyman it's probably one of the most horrifying moments of the entire film. The chemistry between him and Sophie Thatcher, Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian, and Michael Bekemier Is perfect.
Now let's talk about David Dastmalchian because look he is a tremendous actor he's given some really awesome performance and like in The Suicide Squad as Polka Dot Man, The Ant-Man Movies as Kurt. Or even some of his smaller roles like in The Dark Knight or in Dune or Prisoners. He is still a really awesome character actor and with this film that's no different because even though he doesn't play a big role in it he's still gives a really fun and entertained performance as Lester Billings Because you can tell he's having a lot of fun as this character. Now the character of Lester Billings it's really accurate to how he was in the short story because he is coping with the Lost of his wife and he's also a therapist who wanted to help Will Harper get over the lost of his wife. The scene of Lester Billings of talking to Will Harper in the beginning of the film. It does lead to some really nail binding and some really powerful moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Chris Messina Is perfect.
However the absolute big standout of the entire film is Vivien Lyra Blair as Sawyer Harper Because she gives a really powerful and emotional child performance and even though she'll though like 10 years old when this movie came out she does a tremendous job of acting really scared as her character. Also you can tell that she is having a lot of fun as this character. Now the character of Sawyer Harper is really terrific because She knows that The Boogeyman is lurking under her bed and she wants her older sister Sadie Harper To help her. The scenes with Sawyer Harper are downright terrifying because whether it be the scene of her gang attacked by The Boogeyman or her hearing The Boogeyman's voice and you can tell how scared she is because she doesn't want The Boogeyman to attack her or her family and it definitely does led to some really nail biting and some really disturbing moments throughout the film. The chemistry between her and Chris Messina Is outstanding.
Sophie Thatcher plays Sawyer Harper's older sister Sadie Harper in the film And her performance is probably one of the most entertaining performances in the film because she gives one of the captivating and one of the most incredible performances of the entire film and also when she had to be scared she did a glorious job of acting really petrified and very horrified when the movie told her to be scared as her character Sadie Harper. Now the character of Sadie Harper is really interesting because at first she does it believe that her younger sister Sawyer Harper because she doesn't believe that The Boogeyman is real but then she starts too believes it and she wants to protect her younger sister as well as the rest of her family from The Boogeyman so he doesn't attack and kill them. The scenes with Sadie Harper are tremendous. Whether It is her calling her dad about The Boogeyman or her protecting her younger sister Sawyer Harper it does lead to some really heart pounding and some really creepy moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Chris Messina Is remarkable.
Daniel Hagen Voices The Boogeyman in the film and he probably gave the one the most terrifying and one of the most creepiest performance sit throughout the film because you can tell that he is having a lot of fun as this character. Now the character of The Boogeyman is really accurate to the short story because it likes to prey on children and scare them to death to the point that he will eventually eat them. Also The Boogeyman's backstory is actually very interesting because it killed the Billings family and it only tortured a family that experiences tragedy. The scenes with the Boogeyman are downright scary Especially it's introduction scene where it kills Lester Billing´s whole family or torturing the Harper family it does lead to some really dark and downright nail biting moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Chris Messina Is exquisite.
However the best thing about this movie is the directing by Rob Savage Because what I love about his directed that he know they glorious job of adapting this short story because the exact same thing happens the Harper family is coping with the lost of their mother and The Boogeyman targets them because it targets family that are lonely and depressed and the family has to survive against The Boogeyman and overcome their fears. I also like how he builds up the reveal of The Boogeyman because at first the family just hears weird noises but then when they see the Boogeyman you can see how petrified and scared they are when they have to fight against it and survive. I also like how he developed the family as characters because sawyer Harper is very young she is a friend of the dark which is the thing a lot of kids can really to but she also really cares about her family. I also like how he develops will Harper the dad because he had the character that is also suffering through loneliness and the pressure because he have to deal with the lost of his wife and how that takes an effect on him and his two daughters and I think that was very incredible and overall I think he did a terrific job directing this film.
So in conclusion I still really enjoyed this movie because of the storyline having it revolver on the Harper family overcome their fears and and take down The Boogeyman and learn to move on with their past it really brilliant concept in the film execute that perfectly by adapting the storyline from the short story perfectly. Now I will say I think The Shining had a much better storyline because it had Jack Torrance going crazy at the film went on due to him being done with his family so I think that film had a much better written storyline. But again the storyline in this film is still amazing. I also really love the performances in this movie in particular Chris Messina and Vivien Lyra Blair those two give really emotional and Powerful performances as their characters. Even David Dastmalchian who doesn't play a big role in the film but for what he had he did a terrific job as the character of Lester Billings. Also Daniel Hagen does a really excellent job voice in The Boogeyman just scenes of it talking are just really dark and downright chilling. Now I will say though I think the acting in The Shining is better because you can't top Jack Nicholson's iconic performance as Jack Torrance but the acting this movie is still really fun and really entertaining. Also I think The Boogeyman is up there with the Aliens from No One Will Save You and one of the creepiest villains of 2023. I highly recommend you watch the film especially if you enjoy Steven King movies like The Long Walk with Mark Hamill. Then I'm sure you're going to like this one as well. I give this film a 10/10.
