Here is My Movie Review of Afraid

now when this movie will announce it was originally called they listened which is based off the book of the same name and David Dastmalchian was going to be the main laid of this film. But then they changed it to Afraid and they released the trailer and David Dastmalchian if not even in the trailer or the marketing but he is in the movie. So when people saw this movie they hated it and I watched this movie as well and this is probably one the dumbest horror movies of 2024. i think this film is up there with the storyline in madam Web and one of the dumbest storylines of 2024.

now the story in this film is so dumb because it revolves around Curtis and his family everything is going well and he decided to get this artificial intelligence named AIA and at first the family really likes it but then they learned that the AI is trying to kill them and it's up to Curtis and his family to stop the AI from trying to kill them and that's basically what happened then it is probably one that dumbest storylines for a Blum House movie because it just so generic and really dumb now it's not bad at the storyline fantasy Island I think that movie had a way dumber storyline than this one but the storyline this is still really bad.

The acting in this movie if not that good because most of the actors are just really bland or just completely over the top and she needed to the point that they give someone the dumbest performances of 2024 now there is one actor I didn't really hate in fact the factor is the best part of the film. But I think this movie is up there with the acting in Joker 2 as one of the worst acted films of 2024.

John Cho plays Curtis In the film and he is trying his best as the character and there are some moments where he does give a good performance but motivates just kind of okay so I just think his performance is average. Now I will say though i can tell that John Cho is having fun in this movie What is really disappointing is that this actor gives a tremendous performance in the movie Searching. But in this movie it just feels like he's going through the motions and just sleep walking throughout his performing and it feels like he just wanted to get this movie over with that's how boring his performance was. Now the character of The chemistry between him and Katherine Waterstone, Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Lukitat Maxwell is okay. 

Katherine Waterstone plays Curtis´s wife Marcus and her performance is just bland because she is going through the motions and it feels like she just did this movie for a paycheck Just so she can go do another movie. But the character of Marcus It's terrible because much like your husband at first you believe that AIA is completely fine. She is not doing anything bad but then later on what happens well she starts to figure out that the AI is trying to kill her and her family and it's just so dumb and awful. The scene where she first introduces the AI program to the family just so dumb and feller heavy and not to mention I think she is even more unlikable than Andy's mother in Child's Play 2019 because At least with that one it made sense that she was a little stressed out because she had a job and she had a reason to be harsh on her son Andy because she did believe that Chucky was going to kill her. But in this film The mother does not again she doesn't believe that the artificial intelligence is going to kill her. The chemistry between her and John Cho is decent. 

Havana Rose Liu voices AIA In the film and I have to say her performance is probably the worst performance in this movie because it doesn't feel like she's trying sometimes he goes really over the top and sometimes she's just very flat and to be honest her performance is probably up there with Rose Byrne performance in Jexi in terms of giving the worst performance in the film. But the character of AIA It's awful because you know exactly where she's going to go she's going to start out nice and then add the film goes on to turn to become more Sinister and I don't give a shit I legit didn't care about her turn and then by the end she changes which is so stupid and the scene where she goes evil and doesn't make sense because the movie rush to it really quickly and other give me enough time to be developed. The chemistry between her and John Cho is okay.

Lukitat Maxwell Plays Iris In the film and her performance is much like the rest of the actors in the film is awful she just overacts. Now I am aware that this is a new actress so I don't necessarily blame her for giving  a horrible performance. I mostly blind the script but again She is still awful as this character. Now the character of Iris It's just a stereo typical of 17-year-old teenage girl who just bitches about a lot of things she doesn't like the the AI and then she eventually like just doesn't make any sense into seeing where she finds out that the AI program is trying to kill her and her family it is just so stupid and so ridiculous and it's probably one the dumbest moments of the entire film. The chemistry between her and John Cho is okay.

Now the actor that gave The best performance In the film was David Dastmalchian who plays Lightning in the film and look even parts were this movie is really not working David still give it his all he still gives a really fun and charismatic performance because the way he plays Lightning is really interesting he played him as this very snobby arrogant Steve Jobs like character and it worked really well. To the point that I wished that David Dastmalchian was the main lead in this film because he is actually having a lot of fun as this character. Now the character of Lightning was the only character I liked in this film because even though he doesn't play a big role in the film he was the most entertaining character in this film because he does have this really fun and unique personality the way he kind of mimics Steve Job´s mannerism by being very arrogant is just really fun to watch and all of his scenes are incredible especially when he explains to Curtis what the AI does it don't really fun and really interesting moment in the film and the theme of him not believing that the AI is also really fun to watch and the chemistry between him and John Cho is incredible and you can tell that they are having fun in this film.

However as bad as the acting is nothing can compare that to the horrible and I mean horrible directing by Chris Weitz Because he tried to cover the topic of AI but this try like I said before that has already been covered multiple times in other movies like I,Robot, Chappie, and Finch But he had the thing those movies handled the subject a lot better than this one. But when he's trying to lean to the more scary stuff of the film particularly the horse stuff that also fails because I kid did not there's nothing scary about this movie nothing because the stuff you saw in the trailer doesn't happen till like the third act most of it is just boring creepy stuff that's not even scary. By the way, The Boogeyman 2023 is a lot more scary because that movie literally opened with The Boogeyman killing a baby in its crib. The film cut away from it but right from the store you can tell that this movie is going to be very scary and it is really disturbing. So overall I think he did a horrible job directing the film. It was really weird and this is the same guy who directed a perfect film that being The Golden Compass so how can he go from that to this horrible film is so weird and bizarre. 

So in conclusion i still don't like this movie because the storyline is just so overdone because it revolved around this family getting a AI program and at first it's really good but then it turned out to be evil so the family has survive against it and you seen it done better in other films like chappie or I,Robot with Will Smith both of those movies Do the whole AI thing way way better this movie did because it plays it so safe well Chappie and I,Robot they push the darkness with AI much better. Also the performances are not that good aside from John Cho who is trying his best you can tell he is trying to give a good performance. Also the actor that does steal the entire movie is David Dastmalchian who plays Lightning and his performance was the best because you can tell that he had actually having fun to the point that again I wish he would the main lead in this film. All the Lightning were the only character I liked because it wasn't dumb he had a personality and all his moments were the best moments in this film. But aside from that most of the other performances that are just so over the top. Also there's nothing scary about this film because everything that happens in the film is just very bland and there's nothing creepy that happens in this film. I think this film is up there with Tarot as one of the worst films of 2024. I think this film is also up there with Five Nights at Freddy's 2 as one of the dumbest films of the 2020s. I say just skip this movie go watch chappie with Hugh Jackman or go watch Longlegs with Nicolas Cage Because those films have much better storylines and the characters are a lot more interesting. I give this film a 2/10.
