Here is My Movie Review of Ex Machina
So basically what happens is that you have this guy named Caleb Smith wins this contest to go to Is this research facility to meet his boss Nathan Bateman who tells him He has to do a test on this Robot named Ava that he wants to him to educate her and spend time with her. But as they start to bond he figures out that Nathan Bateman has bigger plans By reprogramming Ava In reality by killing her so It is up to Caleb Smith to help Ava escape and that is basically what the story is for the film.
The acting in this movie is fantastic. I think everyone does a terrific job as their characters.
Domhnell Gleason plays Caleb Smith In the film. I have to say he still does an amazing job as this character. What makes Caleb Smith Such a interesting character that all he wants to do is to set Ava free from this facility and explore the world. Probably the best moment with Caleb Smith Is where he finds out that Nathan Bateman has been just using robots for sex and reprogramming them by killing them. Not only was it really dark but you can just see the anger on Caleb Smith’ face Because he Was shocked to see that Nathan Bateman never really cared about the robots; he just wanted to abuse them for his own selfish acts. It is probably the darkest moment of the entire film. The chemistry between him and Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac is still spectacular.
Alicia Vikander Plays Ava in the film. I have to say she does a marvelous job as the character. What makes Ava such a sympathetic character that you really feel bad for because she is sick of being controlled by Nathan Bateman and just wants to be out in the world doing her own thing. Probably the best moment with Ava is when she tells Caleb Smith that Nathan Bateman is lying to him and not only wasn't really suspenseful but it made sense because he thought that he was being friendly towards them but in reality he is just using him to abuse Ava and kill her. The chemistry between her and Domhnell Gleason Is still really awesome.
However the absolute big standout of the entire film is Oscar Isaac as Nathan Bateman. What makes Nathan Bateman such a tremendous villain is that he thinks he is more superior to everyone he thinks he is God. But he's not actually God he is just playing God because he thinks he's way better and smarter than anyone else in the world. Also Nathan Bateman is so much fun to hate because right from the start he doesn't really care about the robots because all he does with the robots is to have sex with them and kill them Just because he wants to and you really want something terrible to happen to him and luckily something does happen to him Ava gets her revenge on him by stabbing him in the back with a knife which kills him. I still think he's up there with The High Evolutionary from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 as one of the best villains that you just love to hate. The rivalry between Caleb Smith Is excellent. The chemistry between him and Domhnell Gleason Is outstanding.
The directing by Alex Garland Is incredible because For this being Alex Garland's Directing debut I have to say he still does a terrific job directing this film because what I like about his directing is that he does a glorious job tackling the subject of technology evolving because in real life technology is evolving. In Japan there are actual robots. They are also making self-driving cars so people can get to one point or another just by telling the car where they want them to go. I think it is really extorting how he did that.
So in conclusion I really enjoyed this movie. I think it does a great job with its social commentary of how technology is evolving over time. I think this is up there with The Farewell as one of my favorite A24 films. I still think Oscar Isaac gave one of his best performances in the film. I still think this is up there with The Card Counter and one of my favorite Oscar Isaac films. I still think if you enjoy The Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe then I'm sure you'll like this one. I give this movie a 10/10.
