Here is my movie review of The Suicide Squad.
Now when it comes to the first suicide Squad movie. I really did not like it. I think it's one of the worst comic book films ever made because the storyline was just really boring and not that interesting and the villain was the enchantress such a bland and such a uninteresting villain. Also aside from Amanda Waller and Harley Quinn most of the other characters I didn't really care for. They were just bland because they didn't act like their characters from the comics. But this film actually fixes a lot of that films issues there's a lot more interesting characters and they even take some really boring characters from the comics and make them a lot more interesting By developing them as characters. It also has a much better villain. This is probably up there with Spider-Man No Way Home as one of My favorite films of 2021.
Now when it comes to the storyline in that first suicide Squad film I hate it because it was not interesting it felt like it was trying to be a rip-off to Thunderbolts from 2025 we have all these villains teaming up to take down a bigger threat. But in this film I think the storyline is a lot stronger how it focus on Robert Dubois/Bloodsport jail and he gets recruited to the suicide Squad by Amanda Waller but he doesn't want to do it but she says if he doesn't he'll face more jail time and daughter will be sent to bell reeves prison for life. So what sport eventually decides to be on the team and at first he doesn't really care about any of them he just finds them annoying. But as the film progresses he does eventually like them and they have to all team up to take down Starro The Conqueror AKA project starfish and that's basically what the story is for the film.
Now the acting in Suicide squad 2016 was really bad no one was giving a great performance except for two actors those being Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller but luckily in this film the acting in a lot better and a lot more watchable and way more entertaining to watch than the 2016 movie.
However the absolute big standout of the entire film is Idris Elba as Robert Dubois/Bloodsport In the film and he probably gave the one the most captivating it won the most incredible performances in the entire film. Now out of all the characters Robert Dubois/Bloodsport Is probably my favorite character in the film because he does go through a really big character arc because at first he doesn't want to be on the team he just wants to be left alone and he doesn't like his daughter they have the rocky relationship but he has to be on the team or else his daughter will be facing jail time for a long time and at first he doesn't like his team he finds them annoying but as the film progresses he does start to like them. Also this is what Deadshot should have been in the first movie not sympathetic just pure evil. Now there are so many amazing moments with Bloodsport whether it is him arguing with his daughter or him being afraid of rants or him and his team taking down Starro It does lead to some really powerful and Incredible moments in the film.
John Cena plays Peacemaker In the film and his performance is probably Well the most entertaining performances in the film because you can tell that John Cena is having a lot of fun and this character they'll be moments where he is really funny at this character but there will be also moments where he comes off very intimidating. I still think he was the perfect choice to play this character. Now the character of Peacemaker is really incredible because this is a guy who cherish his piece with all his heart to the point that he doesn't care how many men women and children he had to accomplish to get it and at first you think he's with the team but he is actually with Amanda Waller So he essentially turns on the team. The scenes with Peacemaker are probably some of the best moments in the film whether it's him telling the team that he cherishes piece with all his heart or him laughing and Bloodsport being afraid Rats or him turning on the team it does lead to some really funny and some really nail biting moments throughout the film. Fun fact actors like Dave Batista, Joe Kinnaman, Channing Tatum, Alan Ritchson, and Jason Ackles were all considered to play Peacemaker.
David Dastmalchian plays Polka Dot Man In the film and his performance is probably the funniest performance in the entire film because He is really over the top in the film. But there are moments where he gives the really emotional performance in this film. Now the character of Polka Dot Man is really funny and the film does get him right and turn them being funny but I also like how the film makes him really tragic because his back story is messed up because when he was younger his mom experimented she was obsessed with superheros that wanted to turn him and his brothers and sisters into superheroes by giving them powers and he accidentally killed his mom when he used his powers for the first time. The scenes with Polka Dot Man are probably some of the best moments in the film whether it is him refusing to fight Staro or him telling the team about his backstory or him getting killed by Staro it does lead to some really funny and some really emotional moments throughout the film Fun fact actors like Paul Dano, Chrispin Glover, Jesse Eisenberg, Rami Malek, Ben Winslow, Bill Skarsgard, Cillain Murphy, Elijah Wood, Michael Angarano were all considered to play Polka Dot Man. The chemistry between him and Idris Elba is still awesome.
Viola Davis comes back as Amanda Waller in this film and she was the best thing in the 2016 film And her performance is incredible she makes this character her own and It feels like she hadn't missed a beat as this character. Now while I liked her in the 2016 movie my main problem with Amanda Waller is that she was a little too family friendly. But luckily in this film that's not the case because in this movie Amanda Waller is a fucking bitch and that is exactly what she has to be because she is so set on just having the team get the mission done to the point that she doesn't give a shit about them do anything her power to stay in charge of task force X. Not to mention you really hate this bitch because every time you see her on screen like no don't kill off another character in the movie does a phenomenal job make you hate her. Now there are so many moments with Amanda Waller and this film that are really incredible Whether it's her introducing Bloodsport to his team or in the third act when she just yells and just loses her shit over the suicide Squad not listening to her to the point that feel blow all their heads off if they don't listen to her and it does lead to some really intense and some funny moments because it's the way Violet Davis delivers the lines.
Margot Robbie Comes back as Harley Quinn and if you seen her in her other appearances like suicide squad and Birds Of Prey she still gives a really tremendous and fun performance at this character to make the character her own and you can tell that she is having a lot of fun as this character. To be on this is probably her best performance she has given in the DCEU. Now the character of Harley Quinn is relatively the same as she was in her two other appearances she's still funny she's still entertaining and in this film well she doesn't have a lot to do for what she does have she still contributes to the storage because she want to help Bloodsport and the rest of the team take down Starro. Now the themes with Harley Quinn are incredible whether her seeing Starro for the first time or her having this bond with Javelin over how he likes her accent and it does lead to some really funny and some really entertaining moments throughout the film.
Daniela Melchior plays Ratcatcher 2 in the film and her performance is probably my favorite performance in the film because she gets such an emotional performance as Ratcatcher 2 and she give a similar performance to Lewis Pullman as Bob from Thunderbolts* both of the actors give really powerful and raw performances in these movies. Now the character of Ratcatcher 2 is really incredible because she's essentially the emotional core that holds this team together because she really cares about her team she want to get the mission done. The scenes with Ratcatcher2 are probably some of the most emotional and captivating moments of the entire film whether it is her bonding with King shark or her using her rats to take down Starro It does lead to some really powerful and heartwarming moments throughout the film. Fun fact Actresses like Maya Hawke, Kaitlyn Dever, Thomasin McKenzie, and Anya-Taylor-Joy We're all considered to play Ratcatcher2 The chemistry between her and Idris Elba is tremendous.
Sylvester Stallone voice King Shark In the film And his performance is probably one of the most entertaining and really fun performances in the film because even though Sylvester Stallone is essentially playing himself. But you can tell that he is having a lot of fun as this character. Now King Shark as the character is really interesting because you actually do feel bad for him because he doesn't have any friend he's all alone so he's very similar to Bob from Thunderbolts* how both of them are lonely But he also wants to help his team take down Starro. But he is also not afraid to kill anyone by eating them alive. The fiends with Kingshark are probably some of my favorite moments in the film whether it's him making a gray sculpture of Peacemaker and Peacemaker says yeah that looks nothing like me or him bonding with Ratcatcher2 or him fighting Starro with his team it does lead to some really emotional and some really fun and entertainment moments throughout the film. The chemistry between him and Idris Elba is still astonishing.
Peter Capaldi plays The Thinker in the film and his performance is really incredible because he's probably gives the most over-the-top performance as The Thinker he gives this character such a really fun and eccentric personality in the film. Now The Thinker as a character is really incredible because even though he's with the suicide Squad trying to stop Starro. But he is also the one responsible for making Starro because he was obsessed with experimenting on otherworldly creatures it made him go crazy as a result. The scenes with the thinker are incredible whether it's him explaining what project starfish is or him explained to the suicide Squad that the US government what responsible for taking Starro Away from its home that being space. It does lead to some really intense and creepy moments in the film. Also the way The Thinker gets killed in this movie is pretty graphic now that's not saying much because most of the people that dying this movie go out and really gruesome ways. But the way the thinker dies is probably one of the most graphic deaths Of the entire film because Starro grabs them with its tentacles and the thinker is like begging him not to kill him and he just kill them by ripping him in half and in the words of Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2 staining the wall because his body parts fly all over the glass along with all the blood. Fun fact actors like Mark Hamill, John Malkovich, Gary Oldman, David Tennant, Matthew McConaughey, Mark Strong, Brian Cranston, Toby Jones, Paul Giamatti, Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Matt Damon, John C Riley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Johnny Depp, Gain Carlo Esposito, were all Considered to play The Thinker.
Now when it comes to the villain in the first Suicide Squad movie which was the Enchantress I hated her. I thought he was a boring villain the CGI on her looked really bad and her motivations just did not make any sense whatsoever because the movie she was then was really terrible. But in this film The Villain is a lot better because Starro is a really awesome and amazing villain and in the comics Starro was very boring and not interesting. But in this film Starro is a lot more threatening and actually really sympathetic because you really feel bad for him because he was an outer space and he just wanted to be left alone but unfortunately the US government took it away from if home and starting to experiment on it and that's why Starro one revenge on all the human for mistreating him. The scenes with Starro are exhilarating whether it is the scene of him emerging from the building or him putting the humans under its control by having little variations of himself it does lead the thumb really amazing and so really horrifying moments in the film. I also like how he is essentially inspired by 1950s monsters from Famous horror movies. I still think Starro is up there with Xu Wenwu from Shang Chi as one of the most sympathetic villains of 2021 and as well as one of my favorite villains of 2021.
However the best thing about this movie is the directing James Gunn is incredible because he manages to take all these character that people might not get attached to and sometimes he makes all these characters very tragic and sympathetic especially King Shark who doesn't really have any friends. To a reluctant criminal named Bloodsport who didn't really care about his team and didn't have a good relationship with his daughter and became one of the best main characters of the film. I also like how he even makes the villains of a thing Starro because he could have made Sorrow like the comics very boring not really interesting. But no he doesn't instead he makes Starro this very tragic and downright broken villain that just wanted to stay in outer space but was experimented on by the humans and wanted revenge on them for what they did to him. He also managed to make this movie funny but both of you put so much heart and emotion in the film as well with the stuff with the Ratcatcher2 the stuff with Bloodsport and again even the stuff with King Shark and even Polka dog man who in the comics is very silly he was even made sympathetic and was given a tragic backstory with his mother. I also like how he doesn't ruin the tragic moments with a auto points joke he went to the emotional moment play out first and then has won the characters crack a joke and that's why I love how he makes this film consistent with his tone and I think it is really incredible of how he did that and overall I think he did magnificent job directing this film.
So in conclusion I still love this film because it actually fixes a lot of the problems I had with that first suicide Squad movie because that film would really boring. Well this film how the much better storyline because it is really interesting haven't revolved around Bloodsport teaming up with all these other characters that at first he didn't really care about he doesn't really care about going on this mission to take down project starfish AK Starro but as the film progresses he does start to like them and I think the thing that helps the storyline is the emotional is of course all these characters characters because all of times are lonely and depressed because they all have horrible and really tragic origins and the film does a glorious job and make you feel bad for them including King shark which it's really interesting because in the comics King Shark it's not sympathetic he is the cold blooded killer. Well in this film they actually do a terrific job of making you feel bad for him because he has no friends. Even someone like Polka Dot Man who in the comics is mostly a joke character he is also very tragic and sympathetic in the film because he was experimented by his mother and has severe PTSD because of what she went through. Also the performances are incredible because a lot of the actors are tremendous and these characters the two stand out performances are from Idris Elba as Bloodsport and Daniela Melchior add the Ratcatcher2 those two were really incredible as the characters. Also even the villain I enjoy because if you know I was not a big fan of the villain in the first suicide Squad movie Enchantress she was really boring but the villain this one Starro Was not only really medicine but Also really sympathetic because he also had a tragic backstory because you was an outer space. But the US government took him away and experimented on him and he won revenge on all the humans that were responsible for project starfish and I think the film did a terrific job of making you feel bad for Starro and they took a character that's very bland in the comics and make him really tragic and really entertaining as well. I still think Starro is up there with Xu Wenwu from Shang Chi as one of my favorite villains of 2021. I also think he is up there with The void from Thunderbolts* as one of the best villains of the 2020s. I highly recommend you watch this film especially if you enjoy really powerful and emotional comic book films like Thunderbolts* with Lewis Pullman. Then I'm sure you're going to like this one as well. I give the film a 10/10.
