Here is my review of Black Widow.
Now when comes to this movie I have only saw this movie in theaters and i haven't watched it since because it's just so forgettable and just not that interesting there are some good aspects to this movie there's some stuff I don't hate but as a phase four movie it is the worst one in the MCU because it's just so forgettable and uninteresting.
Now the storyline in this movie I have to say it's not that interesting it's not that engaging because it focuses on Natasha Romanov / Black Widow her sister Yelena Bilova and Red Guardian to take down this guy named General Drakeov who has all these other black widows under his control in the red room due to the Red Rooms mind control dust a sends his daughter Antonio Drakeov AKA Taskmaster to go after them and try to kill them and prevent them from getting to the red room and it's up to Black Widow to take down General Drakeov and Taskmaster and free all the other black widows and that's it that's the story it's one of the most uninteresting storylines in the MCU post end game. Also I did the storyline in Thunderbolts is a lot more interesting because of the theme that tackles and turned them being lonely and depressed and it had a much better villain that being Void bob's darker half. Also I think the characters were a lot more memorable than most of the characters in the film.
The acting in this movie Is not bad but I think of all the post end game movies this one probably has the worst acting out of all of them because does not really a big standout aside from David Harbor even Thor love and thunder i feel like that movie had better acting because you had Christian Bale as Gorr The God Butcher who the much better than the villains in this film. I will even say that even Ant-Man And The Wasp Quantum Mania had better acting because you had Jonathan majors as Kang the Conqueror and he gave a much better performance then Ray Winston did in this film.
Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanoff Black Widow in the film. i have to say she still does a fantastic job as the character and even in parts of the film that do not work scarlett Johansson still gives a really great performance as the character. the character of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow is really interesting because her backstory is decent because you find out that she was trained in the red room to become a skilled espionage assassin. but I think out of all the characters in the MCU her backstory is probably my least favorite because it's not terrible but I don't think it is good as Namor's backstory in Black Panther Wakanda Forever because he wanted to rage war with the Wakandans because the government made a machine to find vibranium and he thinks it is a threat to his kingdom so he wants to protect his kingdom at all cost so you can understand why he doesn't like the condensed doing that to his kingdom. Now there are some good moments when Natasha Romanov slash Black Widow i do like the part where she gets reunited with her family i enjoy the scene of her fighting taskmaster and will these moments are not the most memorable moments in the MCU I think for this film they are fairly entertaining.
Florence Pugh plays Yelena Belova in the film. i have to say she does a decent job as the character. now the character of Yelena Belova is mixed because there is some stuff I like about her like for example she wants to help her sister Natasha take down General Dreykov and free all the other Black Widows from the red room mind control dust. but there are some stuff I don't like about the country like for example at the end of the movie they tried to make her into not necessary a villain but more of an anti-hero and I thought that was kind of dumb and out of character for her I mean yeah I understand that she wanted revenge on Hawkeye for not saving her sister.
Rachel Weisz plays Melina Vostok in the film. i have to say she actually does a good job and the character. Now the character of Melina Vostok is really interesting because you can tell that she really cares for her daughter and she wants to help them take down General Drakeov free all the other black widows that are being mind-controlled by the red dust in the red room. Now there are some good moments with Melina Vostok Like her and the rest of her family trying to infiltrate the red room or her bonding with her two daughters as well as her husband the Red Guardian and even though these aren't perfect moments in the MCU they fun and really entertaining moments in the film. The chemistry between her and scarlett Johansson is really great.
However the absolute big standout of the entire film is David Harbor as Red Guardian. i still think out of all the characters Red Guardian is still my favorite character in the film because he was probably the most memorable character because all the scenes involving him and all of his jokes actually made me laugh and I really wish the film was all about him. To be honest I think Red Guardian has all of the best moments in the film whether it is him being grossed out when Elena explains how women get into the Red Room or him fighting taskmaster or him wearing his costume for the first time and says it's still fits it does lead to some really intense and some really funny moments throughout this film in fact of all the character that Red Guardian has the best moments in the entire film and it was also fun to see him again in Thunderbolts and in that film he is still really funny. I think Red Guardian is up there with Kingo from eternals as one of the funniest characters in phase 4.
Ray Winstone plays General Dreykov And he absolutely hated being in this film because originally General Drakeov was supposed to be a lot more scarier a lot more intense but Marvel being Marvel they kind of ruined that by having Ray Winston Tone it down and be less threatening and he also hated doing this movie because he found it really annoying because he's not a comic book actor he they dramatic actor and unlike Harrison Ford Didn't really care about being the MCU. He is like whenever I'm Harrison Ford I'm in a captain America movie I'm the red Hulk pay me. I'm Harrison Ford. But the difference being that he did it in a funny way. Well Ray Winston was really annoyed by it and he really hated being in the MCU. And to be like I don't really blame him his performance it wasn't bad But it was okay. Now the character of General Drakeov it's really interesting because the idea Of his character I like this idea that this guy is a century kidnap and children and point them under his control by making them into skilled killers is a great idea but the problem is There's no reason why he's doing this we don't know why Dreykov is torturing These girls. So well his motivation is really good In concept it just didn't work out and execution now the movie does great job of make you hate this character and there are some good moments with General Drakeov like him explaining his motivation to Natasha Romanov and When he killed one of the Black Widows by activating the chip in her head which causes her to die And it doesn't mean to some really intense and some really interesting moments in the film. But out of all the phase four villains in the MCU I think General Drakeov has one of the most confusing motivations out of all of them because it doesn't make any sense. Fun fact actors like Hugh Grant, Mads Mikkelson, Jeremy Irons, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Gary Oldman, Javier Bardem, Mark Strong were all considered to play General Dreykov. The chemistry between him and Scarlett Johansson is still amazing.
However the absolute worst to performance in the entire film is Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster Now I will Ewan McGregor as Black Math because that performance is really terrible and really dumb and there are moments where she gives a pretty decent performance despite the horrible writing. But the character of Taskmaster is still really bad but there is stuff I don't hate because I think the first two acts for this character I think Taskmaster was very threatening with the heavy breathing he looked like a Michael Myers type killer and he was praying intimidating. Also have costume was comic accurate looked really cool. But unfortunately the character goes downhill in the last half where it's revealed that Taskmaster What a woman was so stupid and my friend Lou hated this change because he was a big fan of Taskmaster and he hated the gender reveal as much as I did because I think it would be a lot better if it was a guy under the mask the whole time instead of a woman that way it could be more comic book accurate. No I will say though I did feel bad for Antonio Dreykov because she was lonely in depressed because she was experimenting on by her dad and there are some decent moments with her like the fight scene on the bridge is really cool how she chased after Natasha and Black Widow during that car Chase is really decent but She is still a shitty villain she's still a big disappointment Because I like the ability she has this ability that she's able to mimic people's fighting style by watching them so it's kind of similar to the comics but They didn't really push it as much as I want them to I think they should have pushed it all the way. To be honest I think she's up there with Ultron as one of the most disappointed because much like that villain taskmaster had so much potential for the MCU. But they got him accurately to the comics he would have been one of the best MCU villains probably in my top 10 favorite MCU villains. But since they didn't do that they just made her a really disappointing villain.
Now the directing by. Cate Shortland is interesting Because there's stuff I think she does well Like she does terrific job of developing Red Guardian at a character by giving him this really fun and entertaining personality. I also like how she makes you feel bad for Taskmaster because of what she went through being lonely and depressed in that laboratory being experimented on by general Dreykov. Although I will admit that she done they decent job of developing black Widow and Elena's relationship you do buy them as family. Beside from those things the thing that she kind of screws up is the storyline because again it's not that interesting Because it just feels way too simple even by MCU standards this storyline is just boring. Also the well I did say today a great job and make you feeling bad for Taskmaster. The character of Taskmaster she completely failed at adapting because rather than being this cool threatening villain she's accentuated just a henchman for the main villain and she does it really have a personality. So she just made Taskmaster one the most disappointing villains in the MCU. Overall I think she did a lackluster job of directing this film.
So in conclusion i'm still not the biggest fan of the film I still think it's really disappointing because the idea of a black widow film is great the problem is it was years too late I think this would have been better and they made it at a phase one movie that way you can have black widow's origin be told and it would fit with the phase 1 one movies but having the film being the post endgame era it just feels so out of place. Also not to mention the storyline is probably the most Born storyline out of all the phase 4 movies because All it is is about Natasha Romanov and her sister Yelena freeing these black widows from the Red Room´s mind control dust and take down General Drakeov and his daughter Taskmaster and that's basically what the story is to be honest I did the storyline is even more boring than the storyline in Ant-Man and the Wasp quantum mania because at least that film had a much better storyline and the villain even though I do find Kang a disappointing villain at least he was more menacing and a lot more entertaining to watch than General Drakeov was in this movie. The performances are not bad but all the phase four movies in the MCU this one probably had the most luster acting out of all the films in the post endgame era because Scarlett Johansson is good and I will say David Harbor is the standout as Red Guardian he stole the show and we think about I don't think Florence Pugh was bad in this film. But I liked her better than Thunderbolts*. Also taskmaster as a villain she did have some good moments and I think the first two acts with her are really good. Also I did feel bad for her because she was also suffering through loneliness and depression because she was Experimented on by General Drakeov but by the 3 act they kind of just fumbled this character and what is really disappointing is that she had a really interesting ability which is able to mimic other people's fighting styles. But she's up there with Ultron and one of the most disappointing villains in the MCU. The only thing that's memorable about this film is that it was the very first movie that me and Lou ever went to see in theaters. So overall I think skip this movie and go watch Eternals Because even though that movie is messy it has much better acting and I think two out of the three villains are actually better than the villain than this movie. So I give this film a 5/10.
