Here is My Movie Review of Moana 2026
So when I saw the trailer for this movie I knew it was going to be shit because I am sick of these Disney live-action remakes so I watched the film and this is one of the worst films of the entire year and the main reason why that there's nothing that is different about this movie is the same shit at the original dress without the magic or the charm that original film had. This is one of the dumbest movies of the entire year.
Now the storyline I don't have to explain because it's the same thing as the original it Without the charm or the magic that that original story had because again just about Moana trying to return the heart of Ta Fiti and he she needs Maui and she has to protect her Island and that's it there is no story it's just boring baloney.
The performances in this movie are horrible and even the actors that come back I don't think they did a good job. I will mean there's one good performance that is my refund to watch but this is the worst acted film of the entire year.
Now for this being Catherine Laga'aia's First movie she's ever done I don't blame her. I think with a better script she could have played a good Moana but her performance would just be kind of boring because it's just the same thing as the original but without any heart and emotion. Now I will say her singing voice is okay but it doesn't hold a candle to the original actresses singing voice from the original film. But the character of Moana is just so boring she doesn't really emote that much and the character arc that she goes through is not that interesting in the original it is but in this movie it is not. Also the emotional stuff with Moana does not work the thing where she hugs her grandmother. In the third act it didn't really do anything the original it made sense But in this film they do the scene but it doesn't really hit you that hard and turn them emotion like the original film did. So that's why I think this Moana is just kind of Bland and very boring. And doesn't really have the emotional impact that the original Moana had in the original film. The chemistry between her and Dwayne Johnson, Jermaine Clement, Rena Owen, John Tui is okay.
However the worst performance of the entire film is Dwayne Johnson as Maui who probably gives the worst performance of the entire year because he is just playing himself he's not even playing a character and that dumb wig he wears it looks so dumb it looks fake it looks like it's a CGI wig but nope that is actually a wig that he wore on set and it looks horribly green screened when you watch it in the film and his performance again it's not interesting it doesn't really work like in the original film Dwayne Johnson had charisma here it just feels like he's taking a nap and Evenly tried to say the lines from the original film it's not that interesting and his singing is so bad because in the original movie he sung perfectly but this his singing is really bad. But the character of Maui is really badly written because he's really boring and he doesn't have the charisma or the personality that he had in the original film because in the original film he was really funny he had a great singing voice and he really cared about Moana But in this film he comes off very exhausted like he want to take a nap and even doing the final battle. He does seem cool; he didn't come off as the generic modern Disney character with no charisma or entertainment value at all. I will even say that Shang-chi had more charisma in his own movie then Maui does in this film because Shang-Chi goes through a character arc he has some for a moment but you also had a lot of heart and emotion and Simu Lui gave a four bear performance then Dwayne Johnson. Also the scene where Maui sacrificed himself it wasn't as emotional and it was in the original film even his jokes weren't that funny when you turned into the shark it looks really bad and even when things you're welcome it sounds really bad and doesn't hold a candle to the way he sung it in the original film. The chemistry between him and Catherine Laga'aia is okay.
Now I will say the best performance in the film is Jermaine Clement as Tamatoa because you can tell that he was having a lot of fun and even though it is dumb how they just copied and pasted all the lines that he said in the original film and the song shiny and they did change it up a bit It was actually a really smart change. Now the character of Tamatoa is accurate to how he is in the original film. He loves shiny things and he likes to tease Maui. Also his Shiny song is still great Jermaine Clement still has a great singing voice and hey of all the actors his singing voice is the least terrible. Also the CGI on Tamatoa doesn't look that bad in fact I think his the best looking effect in the movie because everything else looks really bad. Well Tamatoa actually looks pretty good. The chemistry between him and Catherine Laga'aia is pretty good.
Rena Owen plays Moana's grandmother and she's not bad but she wasn't as good as the original actress from the original film because even though she sounds like the original it just comes off as a copy and paste performance from the original she doesn't really do anything new with the character. Now the character of Moana's grandmother she's just the same as she was in the original film and when she died in the beginning you just don't really feel it as much as you do in the original film and the scene where she hugs Moana in the third act It just done the whole candle to the whales executed in the original film. That's how uninteresting this character is at this point with the cash grab of a remake. The chemistry between her and Catherine Laga'aia is okay.
John Tui plays Chief Tui In the film and his performance is just so boring he doesn't even hold candle to the original actors iconic performance from that original film it does feels like he sleepwalking throughout the movie he just walked to get the movie over with and whoever he tries to say the like lines from the original film it just doesn't work because he is just saying the lines with no emotion or no Charisma at all. Now the character of Chief Tiu In the original film he was a really interesting character. He was really strict because he didn't want Moana to go in the ocean because he lost his friend. But they change it to he lost his cousin during a boat accident and it doesn't really make you understand why he is strict, it just comes off of a really dumb change. Now in the original Chief Tiu says I should have burned those boats a long time ago. But in this film he doesn't say the line at all. Seriously I can go on and on as to why this interpretation of Chief Tiu is poorly utilized but in the end I'll leave you with this. The animated one is better. The chemistry between him and Catherine Laga'aia is okay.
Now the directing in this film is really interesting because this film is directed by Thomas Kail Who directed Hamilton and that was really awesome but with this film I really think he did a really bad job because he didn't really change much all he did was copy and pasted the entire film with no heart and emotion and he just added so many dumb changes like the stuff with Moana's character Arc Was just boring and it didn't hold a candle to the way Moana is character arc was handled in the original film. Also the stuff they did with Maui was really dumb the whole man and woman was such a dumb line of dialogue. Also his singing is really bad and there's no interesting or amazing moments with Maui like it was in the original because all his moments even know they are the same, they are just not that interesting and his singing was really bad. Also the emotional stuff they tried to do doesn't really work because it's just so boring and it doesn't make you feel anything like it did in the original film I already mentioned Moana hugging her grandmother but that really sad moment where Maui says without my hook I am nothing it had meaning in the original but in this film it just felt like they wanted to add that line in because oh it'll didn't the original and it just showed how pointless this remake was. So overall I think he did a really bad job directing this film.
So in conclusion this is just another pointless Disney live-action remake without any of the heart or any of the emotion that original film had. The storyline is just the more boring and less interesting interpretation of the original film. The acting was really bad aside from Jermaine Clement and the actress who plays Moana who is trying most of the actors were really bad Dwayne Johnson was so terrible As Maui he would just play himself The muscle suit he is wearing looked really down the wig looked really terrible he's just not funny and he was in the original film. Even the actress who played the grandmother was just okay. She just did the whole candle to the original Actors from that original film. The CGI was really bad. It looks really fake. You can tell that all the color was sucked out of this remake because this is a pointless and really uninteresting remake aside from Tamatoa. Most of the CGI was really terrible. It was not that bad the CGI effects to bring the wife were okay. The songs were just really uninteresting. They don't really hold a candle to the original film aside from shiny which was pretty good even though they did change a couple things that the only song that's actually really good. Also the climactic battle is the same except without all the heart and emotion and there were no steaks to the climax because it's just Bland and boring. I said just skip this movie and go watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings With Simu Liu because that had the better story. It has more interesting characters and it has better special effects and it has the jokes that are actually funny with Katy played by Awkwafina was really funny and was really entertaining to watch especially the scene where she was on top of a falling building and Shang Chi told her to jump out the window and Katy looks down and she says oh hell no screw you I'm not doing this was a lot funny than any of Maui's stupid jokes in this film. Or go watch any MCU movie, even Captain Marvel, as bad as that movie is. It has better special effects than this and it has better acting. Even though the actors are underutilized they at least try their best. You have a better time watching that then this pointless remake because this film is up there with Mercy and one of the worst films of the entire year. I give this film a 1/10.
